NUTRITION LAB

KSU Nutrition Bldg.

The 3,600 ft2 Nutrition Building includes a wet lab which contains two recirculating systems used for fish and/or crustacean nutrition studies.

This Lab contains 36 (110 liter) glass aquaria supported by medal pallet racks.  Dechlorinated city water is used and recirculated through a 2000 liter mechanical and biological filtration system. A separate system in the same lab contains 24 (110 L) glass aquaria supported by metal pallet racks and consists of a 1500 L vertical screen filter system. Lab with aquaria
Live-feed room
The research lab also has a live-feed room
(131 ft2) which contains 12 conical-shaped tanks primarily used for brine shrimp culture.  The room has both hot and cold dechlorinated city (tap) water available, aeration and acenter drain.
Housed in the Feed Prep room are two Hobart mixers(A-200 T; Hobart, Troy, Ohio), one Hobart extruder, one electric grinder, two convection ovens (Grieve Corporation, Round Lake, IL) and three freezers for storing dietary ingredients and oils. Lab with mixers
Analysis Lab
The Analytical Room contains a Gas Chromatograph (GC; Varian Model CP-3380) used for fatty acids analysis. The lab also has two Nitrogen Evaporation Systems (N-EVAP; Organomation Associates, Inc.) used during extraction of lipids and is located inside each fume hood.  A HPLC (Pro Star; Varian) is stationed beside the GC and can be used for amino acid analysis. The lab also contains other basic necessities for water quality and various other analytical tests related towards the nutrition team research. The Nutrition Building is managed by Dr. Carl Webster.
